Misión Gaia was born in 2011 in Minca, in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the most biodiverse and culturally rich regions on Earth. From the start, our organization was guided by a deep conviction: the conservation of a territory is only possible when the communities who inhabit it are strengthened and actively involved in its protection.
Our mission is to promote in the communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the surrounding Caribbean region the adoption of regenerative practices integrated with education and cooperation, to protect ecosystems and advance toward a just and sustainable development.
As Minca and all the regions of the Sierra Nevada faced rapid transformation, driven by tourism, urban growth, and social change, Misión Gaia has also addressed other challenges. Our efforts include environmental education, agroecology, waste management, and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods, always with the same core belief: that empowered communities are the foundation of conservation.
We began by combining animal welfare and volunteer programs that encouraged empathy and collective action in Minca & Taganga. Over time, our work expanded to include environmental education, agroecology, waste management, and sustainable livelihoods. Today, education stands at the heart of Misión Gaia, building resilience, awareness, and opportunities in isolated communities, reducing social gaps, and fostering the conservation of the territory.
